During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The young political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
